Ranger Voices

One key impact of the WRC has been the increased motivation, inclusion, bonding and general well being among rangers.

Honeyguide Foundation – Tanzania

The WRC often boosts the morale of rangers by promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy competition. Participating in the event gives rangers a sense of pride and belonging, which can improve their dedication to their work.

Wildlife Action Group – Malawi

Just a huge thank you to Tusk org for helping us and so many other rangers all over Africa, not only for the funding assistance but more for lifting the spirits of rangers, bringing us together, making rangers feel special and allowing them to show the world who they are and what they can do.

Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, DR Congo

Due to the nature of our two-week rotations deep in the forest and the dangers and general hardship that our rangers face daily, their sense of well-being is always a top priority for our organization. Seeing rangers around the world come together helps the teams feel connected and respected internationally as heroes.

Mount Kenya Trust – Kenya

Over the five years that MKT rangers have participated in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, we have observed a significant increase in teamwork among the rangers, not only in their work environment but also during off-duty activities. This camaraderie has been nurtured while they prepare for the challenge and during the actual challenge days. The positive changes have been noted not just by other MKT staff but also by donors and community participants at our fundraising events, having received positive feedback from those who have interacted with them.

Save the Rhino Trust – Namibia

The challenge and associated press, benefits, recognition and pride has changed things at SRT. The recent learning exchanges to the southern African wildlife college – facilitated by Tusk – have shown SRT rangers and rhino rangers that opportunities for professional growth exist and that they are not alone as rangers in Namibia and throughout Africa.

Lion Landscapes – Kenya

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge has had a profound impact on building camaraderie, unity, and well-being among Lion Rangers. The challenge also introduces an element of enjoyment and light-heartedness, offering a positive platform for engagement in a context where work often involves challenging conversations around conflict and loss. The Challenge has become a celebrated event among both rangers and conservancies, and Lion Landscapes is exploring ways to further leverage its potential to foster camaraderie and teamwork across Laikipia.

Conservation South Luangwa – Zambia

Competing in the WRC has become a highlight for our rangers each year. The women and mens teams train together throughout the challenge, albeit with a healthy dose of friendly competition. For the main running event, the whole community come out in force to support both teams, with many of their colleagues, friends and family joining parts of the run to maintain motivation.
